I'm Too Old for This Now
Live with change, learn from the past, but move on and stay in the present.
Something has changed, though I cannot tell whether it is the world around me or something in me. I can feel a difference between how I once moved through life and how I move through it now, even if I cannot give that difference a clear name.
When I say that I am too old for this now, I am describing a checkpoint more than an age. I suspect some of us reach moments when the life we recognise begins to feel unfamiliar.
The Past Is the Past, Remember That
I want to understand what happened, what I did well, and what I need to change. Reflection gives an experience some use beyond the moment itself. The trouble begins when I keep returning to it without learning anything new, until remembering becomes a substitute for living.
A memory can hold a version of life that feels easier to love because it no longer asks anything of me. I can revisit the people, feelings, and possibilities I miss while paying less attention to the problems that existed alongside them. That makes it easy to compare today's unfinished problems with yesterday's best moments.
If I spend enough time inside that comparison, I stop noticing what is still available to me. There are people to meet, opportunities to take, and lessons I have not learned yet. I can miss all of them while waiting for life to feel like something it has already been.
The Life I Have Chosen
As I write this, I have problems to solve, costs to account for, and work I need to finish. Resolving one issue rarely means there will be no more. Another responsibility appears, another decision needs making, and there are still people I want to see and things I want to accomplish.
That can be tiring and frustrating. It can also be lonely, especially when I do not know who I can speak to openly about what I am feeling. Yet I sometimes find myself amused by it all. Even the difficulty can become interesting when I am trying to work through it. It is a strange admission, but some of the pain is part of what I enjoy.
I do not know whether I would trade this life for another simply to avoid its cost. The risks, setbacks, sacrifices, wins, and losses have all shaped it. I do not need to pretend every struggle was useful, but I also cannot separate the parts I value from every difficult thing that came with them.
Keep Moving Forward
Keeping going does not mean suppressing what I feel. Some losses need time, and some days call for rest rather than another push. A plan can also need changing. Continuing in the wrong direction out of pride is no better than staying still because I am afraid to leave something behind.
What I want is freedom, and I know I will not reach it by allowing everything that happened to me to become the whole account of who I am. Those experiences matter, but I still have decisions to make. What I choose to do with them will shape the life that follows.
So I let myself feel the highs and the lows. I can cry when I need to and reflect when there is something to learn. Then I return to the next thing I can do, carrying the lesson rather than waiting for the past to come back.
Losers are defined by what happened to them. Winners are defined by what they made happen. The path is always to keep moving forward and keep pushing. That is all.
